Driving & Safety Tips

2022-08-18

Namibia has a vast road network that just about reaches every popular tourist destination, a lot of which are only accessible via gravel road, which require careful driving. For your own safety and to ensure an incident free holiday, please take note of the following:

· In Namibia we drive on the left side of the road.

· The wearing of safety belts in the back and front is compulsory.

· Always have your driver’s license with you while driving.

· Please note the following speed limits:

60km/h – in any town

110km/h – on any main tar road or highway (unless otherwise stated by relevant road signs)

80km/h (although it is advisable to travel even , depending on the road condition) – on any gravel road and on the salt roads at the coast

· 4x4 engaged – NOT MORE than 30km/h. Please make sure to DISENGAGE 4X4 IF NO LONGER NEEDED. Any gearbox or related damages as a result of driving with the 4x4 engaged unnecessarily will be for the renter’s cost.

· It is compulsory in Namibia to drive with your headlights on during daytime.

· Always ensure that your tyres have correct air pressure for the road you are travelling on and check at regular intervals.

· When travelling in remote areas a 4x4 vehicle is advisable and it is best if accompanied by a second vehicle.

· Ensure that you have enough fuel for the journey you have planned as distances are vast. Fill your tank at every available opportunity.

· Always carry water when you travel.

· It is advisable to inform Jihang Tours Car Rental of your itinerary in the unlikely event that you become lost. Authorities will be able to find you if they know your plans.

· Ask advice on the condition of the roads in the areas you plan to visit. If your car has extra fuel and water tanks, use them.

· Be aware of dusty conditions on gravel roads and ensure safe following distances. In wet conditions these roads are very slippery. Please drive very carefully and slowly.

· The salt roads at the coast can also be extremely slippery when wet, especially early mornings or when it is foggy. Please travel extremely slow.

· Make sure you have a current and detailed map or GPS before you set out on your trip as many roads are poorly marked.

· Namibia has a lot of free roaming wildlife. Be on the lookout for animals crossing the road or grazing near the roadside. These animals frighten easily and can jump directly in front of your moving car.

· Avoid travelling at night as wildlife is most active at dusk and dawn, and the possibility of a collision at this time of day is vastly increased.

· You are not allowed to exit your vehicle in most game parks. Please adhere to the relevant safety regulations in these parks.

· Beware of flash floods in dry riverbeds during the rainy season. Although it might not rain in your vicinity, rivers can unexpectedly come down in flood as a result of rains hundreds of kilometres away.

· For your own safety it is advisable to never have large amounts of cash or valuables on you. Also never leave purses, laptops, wallets or any valuable items in open sight in your vehicle. Always lock valuable items in a safe at your accommodation establishments at all times.

· Scan your travel documents (passport, visa, etc.) and email this to yourself. Should your documents get lost you still have access to copies.

· Ensure that your passport is valid for 6 months before leaving on your holiday to Namibia.
